Dulwich Croquet Club Wins Development Award

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Dulwich Croquet Club has just been awarded the Apps Heley Award by the Croquet Association. This national award is made every other year to the 3 or 4 lawn croquet club which has made the most progress in developing its membership, facilities and/or competitive achievements in the previous two years (there are similar awards for smaller and larger clubs). This is tremendous recognition for all the hard work that many members have put in over the last 2 years under all these headings - well done to everybody. The award is worth £250 which we will use as part of our contribution towards the cost of re-laying Lawn 2.

Membership Soars to a Healthly 65

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Two years ago we were worried about membership but we now have a healthy-looking 65 members. Last season the Beginner’s Course attracted the larger proportion of the intake but this year there were more who had played before so we now have more of a balance in our playing strength.

This is the time of year to be thinking about next season. Two thirds of members have less than two seasons’ experience with the Club, so if you are one of them do not be shy about communicating your interests and wishes, and in turn don’t be surprised if even as a “new” member you are asked to take on tasks or responsibilities.

The membership committee will be looking at ways of enhancing the experience of being a club member.

One of the strands is improvement of playing skills. The “graduates” from the newly established AC course formed the core of the Dulwich Cup entry in October which, with the late-season Hi-Lo tournaments, provides a good development platform. We certainly wish to continue this, perhaps with a mid-season programme for those in the middle to high bisque range.

Golf Croquet players now need a more substantial programme in the spring for skills development. The All England tournament could be followed by specific high handicap events later in the season. Even so, several event managers have commented in their inter-club and friendly match reports that these are ideal for gaining experience, so do not be shy about submitting your names next season.

There are also the few social events to which we could add if this is something which would appeal. It would be good to hear from you.

Jan de Swarte

The Club round was a (best of 3 games) tournament over two months. Nineteen members entered at the start of May,when take-up of games was slow but increased towards the end of June. By this time Michael Goodman had distinguished himself by playing nine matches, but it was Janette, Gloria, Jan & Pat who went forward to the Area Final, held at Dulwich, where there were 15 players drawn from eight clubs.

There were 3 blocks of five so that everyone played four games and block winners were promoted to the National final. There followed a single round repêchage for those placed second and third in their blocks; this included Gloria, Pat and Jan, but the former two narrowly failed to prevail.

The National final was held at the East Dorset Club which has five excellent lawns. Jan gained a great deal of experience, but no prizes. The final round was contested between two 15-year olds one of whom (from Ramsgate) had played in our Area final.

I hope that we shall have even more participants next season. This is one of the best ways of learning and improving your game.

Ken Cooke

Farooq (who had won this event himself sometime ago) organised 15 entrants into blocks of five; three block winners to go to the area final in Eastbourne. Members were a bit dilatory in organising their matches but eventually Eric Driver, Julian Stair and Ken Cooke went forward.

To our great delight Ken won through to the National Final at Roehampton on 14 September – and proceeded to win the Championship. This was a magnificent effort, Ken having joined the Club only this year, some 20 years since he had previously played. Not only that, his handicap had been reduced again by the club handicapper and then came down again as a result of his wins in the final
