The Croquet Association AGM at Hurlingham on 17 October saw the presentation of many Diplomas and awards. The  citation for Apps Heley Award (worth £250 to the Club) said that “the Development committee was impressed with the progress the club has made in the last few years…This has taken a united effort from the membership and some determined leadership“. Simon and Ray collected the cup and cheque from the CA President, Bernard Neale.

East Dulwich WI come to Dulwich Croquet

Monday, September 28th, 2009

img_0313_1On a glorious Autumn afternoon 14 members of the East Dulwich Women’s Institute came to Dulwich Croquet Club for lunch and an afternoon of Golf Croquet. Many had not played before but after a little coaching all were quickly on the lawns in pairs taking on their fellow members.

Three games later  (with much chat and laughter) winners were declared (not that it really mattered). We look forward to welcoming you back.

Fun Afternoon 2009

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The Fun Afternoon on Bank Holiday Monday attracted 10 entrants and was enjoyed by all. Despite the slightly dour weather there was a fair turnout all of whom had fun for at least part of the afternoon. Some of the gymkhana tasks taxed the participants, as you can see, and even a simple game of Golf Croquet brought on some furrowed brows.

The winner of the competition was Dawn Reddish (again!) and the winner of the game of ‘Pirates’ at the end was David Collins, who  was just ahead of Ray Hall, both of whom gave great assistance during the afternoon generally.

New Year's Day 2009

New Year's Day 2009

After a fallow period in November and December to allow the “autumn renovation” of Lawn 3 to take effect, we emerged, somewhat bleary-eyed on New Year’s Day for a morning of One-Ball – a simple and enjoyable introduction to Association Croquet.

On 1st January 2009 more than a dozen of us were out on the former bowling green, blowing away the memories of New Year’s Eve. Due to a remarkably dry winter we had in fact been able to play on nearly every Sunday. Sometimes we play Golf Croquet, singles or doubles, sometimes One-Ball including Alternate Stroke Doubles which can be fun.The turn-out has been amazingly consistent, with numbers between 12 and 16. A reward of a drink at the bar afterwards has no doubt encouraged some. The weekly croquet gatherings were organized by John Reddish, except when he was dragged off to the sunny West Indies to watch cricket. In his absence I did my best to keep the show on the road.

The annual Charity One Ball took place on Sunday 15th March. Julian Stair was the winner and we raised £80 for Cancer Research UK. Clearly a case of croquet in aid of a good cause.
