The Burbage

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

The weekend of 3-4 July  consisted of a one day doubles tournament for the goblets followed by a singles tournament for the splendid bowl

On Saturday four pairs contested the goblets.  Sally-Ann & Dawn had difficulty keeping up with the more experienced pairings who all registered the same number of match wins and games, leaving Simon  to resort to net points.  On this basis,  Simon and Paul Newton (7) followed  John Reddish and David Collins (8) who, in turn, were pipped at the post by Ed Dymock  and Gloria Watson (10).

Sunday was another bright and sunny day with  Saturday’s personnel, except for Ken Watson (of the wounded knee) guesting in place of Sally-Ann. After six rounds David swept into a five-win lead from John and Simon (both 4) and was awarded the handsome trophy.

Dulwich mounts two successful raids on East Anglia

Monday, May 24th, 2010

On 23rd May we won our first round match of the Golf Inter-club Murphy Shield, against Bury St Edmunds. A strong team of Ed Dymock, David Collins, Mark Ormerod and Simon Whiteley travelled down to Suffolk to take on a similarly strong team from Bury (one handicap point between us) played on challenging lawns that put the “golf” back into golf croquet.

Played as best of three games, Ed and David initially found the conditions difficult and quickly lost their doubles against Mike Percival and David Crawford 3-7, 3-7. Mark started off strongest with a comfortable 7-4, 7-4 win against Chris Howell, while Simon narrowly lost his first game against Brian Cash 6-7, bounced back in the second to win 7-2, and came back from an initial 0-2 deficit to win the third 7-5. 2-1 to Dulwich by lunchtime.

In the afternoon Ed showed what he could by beating Mike Percival 7-0 in the first game, but wilted in the near 30 degree heat to lose the next two 2-7, 3-7. Meanwhile Mark and Simon wrapped up the match 4-2 to Dulwich with comfortable wins against Brian Cash (7-4, 7-1), and Chris Howell (7-2, 7-2) respectively.  David also hit his stride with two very close games (7-6, 6-7) against David Crawford, with the third game abandoned. An excellent tea in shade and cooling breezes ended a successful trip.

Meanwhile Simon Carter and Pierre Beaudry were both playing in the East Anglian Golf Croquet Open Championship at Colchester (neither was eligible for the Murphy Shield because their handicaps fell outside the permitted limits for our team). The final  was between Simon and Pierre, with Simon retaining his title with a “demonstration of straight shooting” -no surprise there- according to the CA website report (http://www.croquet.org.uk/?section=news&page=newsdb.asp&NewsID=3394)

Congratulations to both Simon and Pierre.

Both these results demonstrate our strength in depth in Golf croquet. It should be a good season.

Friendlies against Temple Bowling and Hurlingham

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

We have had two recent golf croquet friendlies against Temple Bowling (a croquet group in a local bowls club) and Hurlingham.

Robert Laver reports that “the match against Temple was a very friendly match playing seven against seven, three pairs and a single. The rain kept off until after a wonderful tea and the much improved Temple lawn was a pleasure to play on.  Dulwich high handicappers all performed very well and we won!”

Meanwhile Michael Goodman reported on the Hurlingham match:  “We had friendly Golf Croquet match againstd Hurlingham at Dulwich which Hurlingham won  by 4 matches to 3, the decider going to 3 games in which Janette fought valiantly against Fred Marsh but just lost. All was not lost as we were then given a delicious tea by Gloria (as well as lunch earlier) with a mouthwatering rhubarb crumble AND  a chocolate cake!”

Well done to all the participants

East Dulwich WI come to Dulwich Croquet

Monday, September 28th, 2009

img_0313_1On a glorious Autumn afternoon 14 members of the East Dulwich Women’s Institute came to Dulwich Croquet Club for lunch and an afternoon of Golf Croquet. Many had not played before but after a little coaching all were quickly on the lawns in pairs taking on their fellow members.

Three games later  (with much chat and laughter) winners were declared (not that it really mattered). We look forward to welcoming you back.

Golf Croquet SECF Level League vs Woking at Home, 17th September

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Woking and Dulwich both fielded strong teams. We had Pierre and Simon Carter with Ken Watson and Simon Whiteley as support. Their team comprised Jeff Dawson, Malcolm Bigg, Mike Town and Bernard Jones.

In the morning, Pierre and Simon C won their (best of three games) doubles match 2-0 and Ken went down to Mike Town 0-2. Simon W came back from 0-1 to win a close contest against Bernard Jones 2-1. Bernard showed excellent touch on an unfamiliar and fast lawn with fine positional shots but Simon responded with good long clearances and long hoops. This put Dulwich 2-1 up by lunchtime. After lunch Simon C beat  Malcolm Bigg 2-0 but Pierre was beaten 2-0 by Jeff Dawson, and Simon W lost by by the same score to Mike Town. So it was all riding on Ken’s match against Bernard Jones.

Ken lost the first game but took the second game on the 13th hoop. In the deciding game Ken built up a 5-1 lead with some excellent long hoops. Bernard held on with steady positional play to draw back to 6-4. He then took on a series of long clearances at hoop 11, until Ken was finally given a good shot at the hoop to win the third game 7-4. This gave Dulwich the rubber by 4 matches to 3.

BURBAGE BOWL AND GOBLETS/4,5 JULY

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This event has been growing in popularity over the past few years, and I even had to turn a couple of late hopefuls away this year. With the maximum of 12 players for the singles, play was divided into two blocks with an all-play-all structure of five 13 point games I didn’t make last year’s mistake of turning up on the day with a few rounds sketched on the back of an envelope. Instead, I picked Ray’s brains and plundered the Oxford Croquet website and made sure everyone knew exactly who they were playing and when.

The tight schedule meant games were timed to 45 minutes, but most completed. At the end of the blocks, David Collins was winner of Block A, with myself as runner-up, and Simon Gibbs came out top of Block B with Ken Watson close behind. This set up the semi-finals of David v Ken, and a grudge match between old rivals the two Simons.

Despite a strong performance from Ken, David went through to the final to face myself, having seen off the redoubtable Mr. Gibbs.

The final was a close fought game with myself winning 7-5. To sustain interest there was also an Egyptian running simultaneously which was won by Simon Gibbs.

Next day saw 8 pairs compete for the beautiful Goblets. This was played as a straigtforward all-play-all. It was great to see relative newcomers such as Debbie, Peter and Eileen take part and Debbie’s partnership with David Collin’s was very effective with great play from both. They came a creditable third. In the end a final emerged between husband and wife team Ken and Gloria and Peter and me. Despite some aggresive play from Ken, we managed to win 7-2 and I ignored the cries of ‘it’s a fix’.

The weather held up very well and I think everyone who took part would agree it was a fun and enjoyable tournament.

Simon Carter.

TICKET TO RYDE TOO FAR FOR GOLF TEAM

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Dulwich were beaten 4-2 plus one tied match in the quarter-final of the National Golf Croquet Team Competition on 22 July at Ryde, Isle of Wight.

Club historians please refute, but this was probably the first Dulwich team to compete off the mainland. This is a level play competition and the Dulwich team were Captain Simon Carter (0), Pierre Beaudry (0), Ken Watson (3) and Gloria Watson (8).

Dawn was barely breaking across South London rooftops when the intrepid foursome made their way to Portsmouth and Southsea for the crossing, mallets jostling bemused commuters.

Ryde Lawn Tennis and Croquet club is pleasantly situated on the outskirts of town with four full-size lawns - a bit on the sluggish side we found. This inhibited the star pairing of Simon and Pierre who lost their doubles 4-7, 7-5, 5-7 to David Willett (2) and Alan Truckle (2) who controlled their balls with local knowledge. Ken failed to build from winning the second game against Richard Harris (3) and lost 4-7, 7-6, 1-7. Gloria contested hoops well but the accuracy of her lower handicapped opponent Robin Thornton (3) was too much for her, losing 3-7, 3-7.

So, Team Dulwich were 3-0 down at lunch - if lunch had existed! (ask Simon). Tummies rumbling Pierre and Simon stormed back to win their singles against their doubles opponents 7-4, 6-7, 7-1,  7-6, 7-3 respectively. Gloria again competed well but lost to Richard Harris 7-3, 7-3. Ken was tied with Robin Thornton 7-6, 4-7, when the result of the match was beyond doubt.

Back to the hover, back to the train, back to dinner!

Dulwich v Leighton-Linsdale

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Having lost the ‘virtual’ toss, Team Dulwich trecked two and a half hours from South East London to the depths of Bedfordshire. We were made very welcome by Len Buckingham and after the all important cup of tea, play commenced. Leighton have two lawns, both of which have very individual characteristics. It would be fair to say that Team Dulwich have never played on such entertaining lawns! Big hitters Simon Carter and Pierre Beaudry soon learned that long clearance shots were a matter of luck rather than judgement and reigned in their play to beat Leighton’s Richard Keighley and Eve Buckingham 7-3, 7-2. In the singles, Dulwich’s Gloria Watson had a close match against Roger Stroud, just winning 7-4, 5-7, 7-6. Rising star Ken Watson found his Leighton opponent, David Ball, too difficult to beat and lost 6-7, 5-7.

After lunch, Pierre found his form with the lawn and beat Eve 7-0,7-2. Richard also found his form, with very precise placements and good ball control to take both games against Simon to tie break with Simon eventually winning 7-6,7-6.

Ken had more success in his second singles, beating Roger Stroud 7-5, 7-4. However, Leighton’s man of the match David Ball again proved his form by beating Gloria 7-2, 7-4.

A splendid day was rounded off by a delicious home made tea. The fruit cake was particularly tasty.

Final score Dulwich 5 Leighton Linsdale 2.

All England Golf Championship 2008

Jan de Swarte

Jan de Swarte

The Club round was a (best of 3 games) tournament over two months. Nineteen members entered at the start of May,when take-up of games was slow but increased towards the end of June. By this time Michael Goodman had distinguished himself by playing nine matches, but it was Janette, Gloria, Jan & Pat who went forward to the Area Final, held at Dulwich, where there were 15 players drawn from eight clubs.

There were 3 blocks of five so that everyone played four games and block winners were promoted to the National final. There followed a single round repêchage for those placed second and third in their blocks; this included Gloria, Pat and Jan, but the former two narrowly failed to prevail.

The National final was held at the East Dorset Club which has five excellent lawns. Jan gained a great deal of experience, but no prizes. The final round was contested between two 15-year olds one of whom (from Ramsgate) had played in our Area final.

I hope that we shall have even more participants next season. This is one of the best ways of learning and improving your game.
