Unlike Golf Croquet, continuation shots are awarded after running a hoop and after the strikers ball hits another ball (a roquet) allow the possibility of extended breaks of up to 12 hoops. Association Croquet is a very tactical game often described as being similar to snooker because experienced players can build breaks using both attacking and defensive strategies.

For those very new to the game, the additional factors involved in the croquet stroke can slow down their development. However, once grasped there is a fascination in the game that can be addictive. For the beginner the handicapping system alleviates much of the difficulty of developing skills quickly, whilst regular tournament play usually results in increasing skill, and thus decreasing handicap.
