Simon Carter wins charity one ball competition

8 players contested the Charity One Ball on Lawns 1 and 2. All of the games were completed within the 40-minute time limit.

There was an outright winner. Congratulations to Simon Carter who easily won 5 out of 5 as the result of characteristically fine hoop running and a scandalously high handicap.

The runner up was Mark Ormerod with 4 wins from 5 games. Third was Pat Goodman with 2 wins from 3 games. Fourth was John Reddish with 2 wins from 5 games. Fifth was Peter Haydon with 1 win from 3 games. Sixth was Edward Dymock with 1 win from 4 games and 36 hoop points. Seventh was David Collins with 1 win from 4 games and 31 hoop points. Eighth was Simon Whiteley with 1 win from 5 games.

Simon Carter qualified for entry into the National Tournament at Winchester on 12 May 2012. Neither he nor Mark Ormerod is available on that date. Pat Goodman will therefore represent Dulwich.

Thanks offered to the manager were gratefully received, and £102 was raised for Breast Cancer charities.

Dulwich players winning on the national stage

Mark Ormerod won the CA Selectorss Weekend for “up and coming” players. This advanced association tournament is designed to encourage players with the potential to go on to compete in more national tournaments- in Mark’s case it is of course a second coming, as he used to compete at this level in the 80’s. Congratulations to Mark and we look forward to more success for him.

Meanwhile Kent’s golf inter-counties team had two Dulwich players, Simon Carter and Pierre Beaudry. The team won their seventh inter-counties title confirming their position as the most consistently successful inter-counties team. Congratulations also to them.

Fairbairns: Victory for the (slightly) halt and (a bit) lame

The Winners

Michael Goodman amd John Reddish showed that age and recuperation from joint replacements is no bar to competitive croquet, convincingly winning the Fairbairns golf handicap doubles on 17th September with 4 wins out of 4. Gloria and Ken Watson chased them home with 3/4 while the rest of us admired and tried to play croquet.

Thank you Simon for captaining this event
And to Pat whose lunch was heaven sent
We all enjoyed our eventful day
Although I truly have to say
That it would have been more fun to win
But losing is not such a terrible sin!
In the morning the sun shone on us all
But by afternoon it began to rain and squall
Michael and John proved a formidable pair
They truly deserved the trophy that they share
Ken and Gloria were worthy runners up
And the rest of us tried our best to catch them up
So sadly Simon and Pat, Jan and myself, and Robert and Anne
Were in order left behind
But at the end of the day we had such fun
we really, truly, did not mind!

A new name on the Stephen Badger trophy 10-11 Sept

James Benson was a worthy winner of the Badger trophy winning all five of his games, beating Pierre Beaudry, Eric Driver John Reddish and Simon Whiteley (twice- once by +26), together with a handicap reduction to 7.

First 2011 victory for Dulwich in Association A League

Dulwich beat Tunbridge Wells 4-3 in the SECF Association A League. The match was played at Tunbridge in fine conditions on good lawns. Dulwich lead 2-1 before lunch (victories by David Collins and Ray Hall in the singles; Mark Ormerod and Ed Dymock losing a close fought doubles game by 2 points). Following a generous lunch laid on by our hosts, Dulwich won 2 of the 4 afternoon games (victories for Mark and David).

This completes Dulwich’s 4 matches in the Association A League for 2011, and leaves us on 1 victory out of a possible 4. However, we were not outclassed in any of our matches, and with a different “rub-of-the-green” could easily have been on 3 wins out of 4.

In the rain
What a pain
We travelled to play our game
And they won!

Was it fun?
Well, we took our own lunch
And drank Ray’s wine with brunch
But the lawns were so telling
Just like seas in storms swelling
Of course the locals knew the ropes
And so we were left forlorn in our hopes
To repel the home team, which proved too hard
And we were often caught decidedly ‘off guard’!

So the scores were unequal
And we definitely need a sequel
To prove that Dulwich has guts
Against Littlehampton’s ruts
But a good day was had by all
Despite the drizzle, rain and squall
Even the Mayor turned out to greet us
We didn’t really expect such a fuss
But it was the ‘children’s space he came to see
Not the Dulwich team of Ray, Paul, Billy and me
Who’d travelled so far to be down
by the sea!

For the record - a mix of doubles and timed singles was won by the hosts 6-1 with some drawn. The lawns have been described by a well known GC authority as “challenging”
