Compton Crish Dulwich in Level league

A glorious sunny day at the South Coast, magnificent lawns and generous hospitality but a disappointing result for Captain David Whyte and his Level Play squad at Eastbourne against Compton CC.

The morning Doubles pairing of David (2) and Simon Gibbs (2) battled gamely against Philip Marshall (0) and Graham Pegley (1) but went down 6-7, 7-4, 5-7 and we knew we were in for tough day.

Gloria Watson (5). flying the flag for the Ladies, deserved more of the luck in her game against Mike Jay (5) but pushed him all the way before losing 4-7, 7-6, 5-7.

Ken Watson (6) dominated the first half of his singles against Richard Platt (3) but then collapsed into all too familiar mediocrity to lose 7-4, 4-7, 2-7.

Reeling from the fine lunchtime repast the South Londoner’s group huddle promised much. Unfortunately actions could not match words and Ken capitulated to Mike Jay 3-7, 4-7. Then, even the famously voluble Simon Gibbs was reduced to muffled expletives as a fine tactical performance from Phillip Marshall saw Compton home 7-4, 7-1.

Gloria continued to play steadily and severely tested Richard Platt including the completion of a bagel in game two but faded after this effort to lose 4-7, 7-0, 2-7.

This left captain Whyte attempting to halt the whitewash against an excellent and organised Graham Pegley. Chest thrust out and exuding belligerence he played splendidly to win 5-7, 7-5, 7-2. As one watching Compton player commented to your reporter “I like the look of his body language” Perhaps we should run a Course...
