Burbage Bowl and Goblets 2017

The Burbage singles and doubles were played on Saturday and Sunday 24 and 25 June. It was very nearly a full house on Saturday with 11 singles players, there having been a late drop out. The sun shone and the players were split into two blocks, with all-play-all. The top two went into semi finals. Paul Newton and Simon Carter fought a close run game with Paul's steady play, a stroke or two of luck, and smart use of bisques, prevailing 7-5. In the other semi Chris Roseberg, who finished unbeaten in her block, played Tim Lomas, winning after a close fought game on the 13th when she left a a ball in the jaws which she failed to peel from the boundary, fortunately for her Tim failed to clear the ball from behind leaving a tap through. Time constraints meant that the Manager decided on a single 13 point game for the Final. It was to be Paul's day, despite some great shots from Chris, and he sealed his victory (7-3?).

On Sunday, 8 pairs of double battled it out in two blocks of four. At the end, Simon and Chris finished top of theirs and went through to play (Penny and Sue?) who were runners up in theirs. Meanwhile, David Whyte and David Collins saw off the formidable Watsons who surprised (and some may say disappointed) the crowd by playing harmoniously all day. The final was a very close game between Simon and Chris, and the Davids. In the end it went to hoop 13 after Simon ran 12 from some distance to level the game, but left himself with no approach or clearance down to 13. It was left to Chris to clear David Whyte from a very well placed ball in front of the hoop, all the way from the boundary. Not only did she succeed but also put her own ball in the jaws. After a bit of fiddling around, Simon peeled her through to secure the much coveted silver champagne flutes.

Thanks must go to Andrew for organising his always excellent BBQ and to Tim for being a support and R.O.T.
