Presidents Select 2017 Report

Dulwich Croquet Club hosted the 3rd Presidents Selection on the weekend of 14/15 January 2017

Sponsored by Little Forest http://www.littleforest.co.uk/

  • Nick Cheney UK number 25
  • Howard Cheney UK number 20

An excellent first day's play, marred only by the fact that not as much sun about as was promised. However, that did not deter some excellent play from the gathered players. At the end of an all play all, 2 blocks of 6, Lionel comfortably topped GrpA, while JP topped GrpB, but with others all around him

4 from each block went into the qtr finals. Everyone decided this would be better played under minimal floodlights and dry conditions, rather than Sundays predicted downpour. To add something a little different, the qtrs were decided by best of three, 7 point games, with the opening hoop of game one started by recently Reg's suggested idea looking to eliminate the advantage of winning the toss (Reg, feel free to catch up with those concerned for viewpoints). Games were finished in near darkness - supporters at times unable to see who was playing what.

The results followed by a random draw for the semi-finals had Lionel vs JP and Tobi vs Pierre. Prize money available for the first 3 places as well as for the winner of the plate.

Sunday saw the rain arrive in force, but did not deter anyone. Semi-finals were played as 19 point games in constant rain, with Lionel overcoming JP 10-6 and Tobi taking out Pierre 10-7

The Plate ran alongside, using single 7 pt games to keep things moving and people warm! Several close games with it seems added pressure of only having 7 hoops to play with, and again using the adjusted starting method described earlier

The final saw Lionel take on defending champion Tobi; the first game took nearly 1 1/2 hours, a tense affair with a lot of trademark Tobi distance hoop running, offset by Lionel's precise play. In the end Lionel prevailed to win this year's title in rapidly fading light and allow everyone to get back to the bar

Final results

  • Plate final Simon beat Mark 4-2
  • 3rd / 4th playoff JP edged Pierre 7-4
  • Final Lionel beat Tobi 7-6 & 7-5
There was great support for both days for the excellent croquet and the superb BBQ provided by our sponsors.
