Dulwich dominate Surbiton Open

A strong field of 24 assembled on a chilly, but bright morning in Surbiton. Dulwich had 6 entrants, our largest contingent yet at Surbiton.

The field was split into 2, with 11 games in an all play all.

Guy & Simon in Block A, Pierre, Andrew, David and Peter in Block B

8 games played on Saturday with a further 3 on Sunday morning.

Block A didn’t progress as expected, with JP (top seed) suffering a few losses. Peter Dowd of Northampton (last years CA most improved player) came top with 10 wins from 11 games. Laving second place t be fought out in a virtual quarter final between Guy & Simon in the final game of the round. Guy won a tough game 7-4 to progress to the semi final, with 9 wins, and Simon on 7.

Block B saw top seed Pierre, win 10 of his 11 games, his only loss to Richard Bilton, a promising young player from Nottingham.

2nd place was a close run thing, with several players in the running over night, but with a really strong finish, Andrew came though to take a brilliant uncontested 2nd place with 8 wins.

Dulwich other players, David finished with 2 wins and Peter with 4

The semi final was played between the top 2 players in each group, a best of 3, with the first game carried forward from the group stage.

Guy therefore played Peter Dowd, 1 game down from the group stage. 2 long closely fought games saw Guy come through to overcome the deficit, 2-1 (7-5, 7-4)

Pierre was able to beat Andrew in one game 7-4

The final was ( I like to believe) and enthralling one and went to 3 games.

Guy taking the first game with the shot of the tournament, a jump from by the peg, through hoop 12. Not quite in Tobi fashion, but not bad!

Pierre dug in and came back strongly. Good clearances on both sides, jumps and long hoops run. Pierre went on to win the second 2 games, 7-4, 7-3 and therefore to win his first UK A level tournament. A worthy winner

A great season opener, 8 games in a day proving tough work for all concerned. Big thanks to Don and his Surbiton crew for putting on the event and looking after everyone so well.
