Numbers don’t add up at Woking

July 15th, 2010

Having scored 106 hoops to 99 and won 10 games to 8, Dulwich lost to Woking 4-3 in the SECF Golf Level League.

Simon, Pierre, Ed and Ray for Dulwich played Malcolm Bigg, Mike Town, Ross Goodman (no relation) and Bernard Jones at Woking Croquet club for our second SECF match. Battling against newly reset hoops in a solid ground as well as their opponents, Simon and Pierre run away with the doubles match in what is becoming a suspiciouly good partnership. Meanwhile Ed comfortably won against Ross Goodman, and when Lunch was called Ray and Bernard were 1-1.

The afternoon saw Simon loose 1-2 to Malcolm who played a patient and consistent game. The firm hoops negated Simon’s trademark long hoop running and impatience seems to have set in. Malcolm’s technique was to run hoops with a little jump, going through the more flexible top of the hoop rather than risk bouncing off the solid base. The very technique Pierre was using to defeat Mike 2-0. Ray and Ed having swapped partners, both lost 1-2 in tighly fought games.

At 3-3 and the unfinished morning game 1-1 Ray and Bernard moved to the front lawn and in front of a dozen spectators  played an even cat and and mouse game, trading hoops after long clearance battles all the way to hoop twelve. All seemed lost but at 6-5 Bernard bounced off the wining hoop leaving Ray a 2 yards shot to level.  A hampered shot prevented Bernard to take immediate control of 13, Ray’s first shot was short and after a short battle Ray was left  with 4 foot straight shot. A gasp of disbelief in the crowd followed as Ray scuffed the ground sending his ball on the wire. The end came swiftly,  Bernard running an angled 5 footer to wild cheers from the otherwise well behaved crowd.

The disappointment for Dulwich could not dull the memory of the excellent lunch provided by our pleasant host.

A good match, wrong result!

Dulwich win 4-3: Mary Rose Association Advanced vs Woking

July 6th, 2010

Ed Dymock, Mark Ormerod, Pierre Beaudry and Simon Whiteley had to take on an equally strong overall team from Woking on 30th June, in the Mary Rose Inter-Club Trophy.

Ed (1.5) and Simon (1.5) took on Mike Town and Alan Edwards (both scratch) for the doubles. In a very slow game with mistakes on both sides, Ed and Simon made it to rover and peg, but we gave a number of chances to hit in. Mike Town was in very accurate form, only missing one shot all the game, kept Woking in play, who won narrowly +3.

In the two morning singles, Pierre was in imperious form, beating Geoff Cuttle +26 with three peels of his TP completed before getting stymied at rover. Mark was never in serious difficulty against Collin Southern, winning +13.

After a late lunch, the afternoon games followed the pattern of the morning, with Ed and Simon not making much impression and losing -23 and -16 respectively. Fortunately Mark had the measure of Geoff Cuttle +16, and Pierre was reasonably comfortable against Collin, winning +6.

The result mirrored the Murphy Shield Golf Level match against Bury St Edmunds, with the C & D players wrapping up the match, underlining the importance of fielding a consistent team in these positions, as well as good players in the top two positions.

The Burbage

July 4th, 2010

The weekend of 3-4 July  consisted of a one day doubles tournament for the goblets followed by a singles tournament for the splendid bowl

The Burbage trophies

On Saturday four pairs contested the goblets.  Sally-Ann & Dawn had difficulty keeping up with the more experienced pairings who all registered the same number of match wins and games, leaving Simon  to resort to net points.  On this basis,  Simon and Paul Newton (7) followed  John Reddish and David Collins (8) who, in turn, were pipped at the post by Ed Dymock  and Gloria Watson (10).

Sunday was another bright and sunny day with  Saturday’s personnel, except for Ken Watson (of the wounded knee) guesting in place of Sally-Ann. After six rounds David swept into a five-win lead from John and Simon (both 4) and was awarded the handsome trophy.

AYLING CUP

June 28th, 2010

This cup is our oldest trophy, first competed in 1935 and won by Mrs Ayling in 1938, but we still do not know anything about Charles Ayling.

The 2010 competitors

The 2010 competitors

It was competed every year from 1935 to 1986 with a gap in 1944 and then not from 1986. In 1994 it was assigned to an AC handicap tournament and re-assigned in 2003 for Advanced play.

Three of those present  were previous winners, including manager simon Whiteley,  and they were again the tournament leaders, but on who-beat-whom basis, Edward nudged ahead of Mark & Simon to add  his name for the second time.

The following weekend Mark did well in a strong B-level field at Roehampton and earned a half-point handicap reduction, while Ray and John R struggled amongst the minnows.

Dulwich mounts two successful raids on East Anglia

May 24th, 2010

On 23rd May we won our first round match of the Golf Inter-club Murphy Shield, against Bury St Edmunds. A strong team of Ed Dymock, David Collins, Mark Ormerod and Simon Whiteley travelled down to Suffolk to take on a similarly strong team from Bury (one handicap point between us) played on challenging lawns that put the “golf” back into golf croquet.

Played as best of three games, Ed and David initially found the conditions difficult and quickly lost their doubles against Mike Percival and David Crawford 3-7, 3-7. Mark started off strongest with a comfortable 7-4, 7-4 win against Chris Howell, while Simon narrowly lost his first game against Brian Cash 6-7, bounced back in the second to win 7-2, and came back from an initial 0-2 deficit to win the third 7-5. 2-1 to Dulwich by lunchtime.

In the afternoon Ed showed what he could by beating Mike Percival 7-0 in the first game, but wilted in the near 30 degree heat to lose the next two 2-7, 3-7. Meanwhile Mark and Simon wrapped up the match 4-2 to Dulwich with comfortable wins against Brian Cash (7-4, 7-1), and Chris Howell (7-2, 7-2) respectively.  David also hit his stride with two very close games (7-6, 6-7) against David Crawford, with the third game abandoned. An excellent tea in shade and cooling breezes ended a successful trip.

Meanwhile Simon Carter and Pierre Beaudry were both playing in the East Anglian Golf Croquet Open Championship at Colchester (neither was eligible for the Murphy Shield because their handicaps fell outside the permitted limits for our team). The final  was between Simon and Pierre, with Simon retaining his title with a “demonstration of straight shooting” -no surprise there- according to the CA website report (http://www.croquet.org.uk/?section=news&page=newsdb.asp&NewsID=3394)

Congratulations to both Simon and Pierre.

Both these results demonstrate our strength in depth in Golf croquet. It should be a good season.

Friendlies against Temple Bowling and Hurlingham

May 20th, 2010

We have had two recent golf croquet friendlies against Temple Bowling (a croquet group in a local bowls club) and Hurlingham.

Robert Laver reports that “the match against Temple was a very friendly match playing seven against seven, three pairs and a single. The rain kept off until after a wonderful tea and the much improved Temple lawn was a pleasure to play on.  Dulwich high handicappers all performed very well and we won!”

Meanwhile Michael Goodman reported on the Hurlingham match:  “We had friendly Golf Croquet match againstd Hurlingham at Dulwich which Hurlingham won  by 4 matches to 3, the decider going to 3 games in which Janette fought valiantly against Fred Marsh but just lost. All was not lost as we were then given a delicious tea by Gloria (as well as lunch earlier) with a mouthwatering rhubarb crumble AND  a chocolate cake!”

Well done to all the participants

John Reddish won the first tournament of this year, beating Ken Cooke in final marked with early season errors. The holder Mark Ormerod was unable to compete this year as he was detained in New York by ash cloud trouble, but we still had 11 competitors with two vistors from London clubs, and one far country member from Cheltenham.

On a week-end of constant spring sunshine, Tim Dutton managed us all in his usual relaxed style, and found time to barbeque our lunch as well, with Simon Whiteley as his sous-chef. A splendid way for everyone to get their season under way.
